TEST INTERPRETATION

The City of Montgomery, in cooperation with the Montgomery Public Schools, has sponsored the Action Reading program for the last three years. During this time we have seen tremendous growth in the reading skills of our students. The following is an explanation of testing procedures and results from the 1997-98 school year.

TESTING PARAMETERS:

  • The Stanford Diagnostic Reading Test, Red Level was administered. Phonetic analysis, vocabulary and comprehension from grades 1.5 to 2.5 were evaluated.
  • One Class from each participating school was chosen for pre- and post-testing.
  • The test was administered by the regular classroom teacher.
  • The pre-test was administered during the first two weeks of school.
  • The post-test was administered during the month of April.

PRE-TEST RESULTS:

  • All children tested scored below the Progress Indicator Cut-off yielding no national norms.
  • Additional results were gathered by determining the percentage correct for each student in each subtest. Individual and class averages were calculated. These results were used for comparison purposes. (See attached results.)

POST-TEST RESULTS:

  • Two types of results were considered (1) national percentile scores and (2) percentage correct.
  • The percentage correct was used for the comparison (See attached results.)

INTERPRETATION:

  • The most significant gains were made in phonetic analysis.
  • Significant gains were also made in vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Some of the most significant gains were made at schools considered to be "at-risk."

SUMMARY:

This testing indicates that Action Reading has been extremely effective in the Montgomery Public Schools. Not only could the students decode the language but comprehension was increased as was vocabulary. It further supports the current research in reading that states "... children who are better decoders are better readers." One weakness of this testing is the lack of a comparison group. This was not possible due to administrative policy.
